Would people from the US Revolution times understand modern US English?

Oh they wouldnt lock you away for speaking in tongues, because the world was a much bigger place back then and dialects were much more common, and they would definitely get the gist but you would have to be careful what you said and how you pronounced it to make sure they understood.
