Question about the patriots (during Thomas Jefferson's time)?

I read somewhere that an example of rationalism that Jefferson displayed in the Declaration of Independence was the case of the Patriots in various charges against the king. Could someone explain to me about the Patriots in various charges against the king? Thanks
